Jan. 22, 2005... 6PM-CST... The Albertville Chamber of Commerce in Albertville, Alabama recently honored National Author/Writer/Syndicated Columnist/Speaker and Celebrity Radio Talk Show Host, Shirley W. Mitchell, with the "Citizen of the Year Award" celebrating its theme "A New Beginning" for its 50th Annual Membership Meeting and Banquet. The "Citizen of the Year" was introduced with a short video by those who knew her well as the new Chamber Chairman, Dr. Allen Champion made the presentation of the plaque to Shirley W. Mitchell. A very surprised Mitchell invited her family to join her on stage, as she told about her Albertville "roots." Former Citizens of the Year were also on hand to congratulate her, as well as Representative Frank Mc Daniel, D-Albertville. Mitchell stated, "My grandfather was a share-cropper and we lived in a house where you could see through the floor. The community has been the one thing that has given me the power to overcome those humble beginnings, and through it I learned passion plus persistence pays off." (the above excerpts taken from the Sand Mountain Reporter written by Charlotte Christopher, Lifestyles Editor) The Albertville Chamber has recently hired a new "President", Jennifer Moore Palmer - We at Fabulous after 50® wish her the best in her new position. We thank the City of Albertville and the Albertville Chamber of Commerce for bestowing this honor on Ms. Mitchell.

What does it mean to age gracefully? Thanks to modern medicine, we live longer today than ever before. The question isn't how to stay alive, but how to live. There are as many variations on the good life as there are individuals. And here in the South, we are nothing if not individuals. I took pointers from a few remarkable Southern women to find out just how to keep that youthful glow. Vyvyan Lynn gathered words from four Botox-free belles - 103 year old Susie Perry, 39 year old Shawna Robinson, 45 year old Sondra Loggins and 66 year old Shirley W. Mitchell.

...The Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services convened for the first time on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. to begin forging a comprehensive national plan to defeat Alzheimer's disease in reference to the National Alzheimer's Disease Project Act. At the kick off of the meeting, federal members of the council presented findings of an inventory across all government agencies of activities related to clinical care, long-term care and research. The research highlighted gaps and potential opportunities that will play a role in formulating the national plan. The assessment included specific Alzheimer's disease efforts currently taking place at the National Institutes of Health, the Administration on Aging, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius is expected to release the first report on a national action plan in December. The Advisory Council, made up of 15 federal members and 12 non-federal members, will meet again in January.

The site contains recommendations of online pharmacies from the National Associations of Board of Pharmacy and the Pharmahelper online search engine with drug information, reviews, and price comparisons.

...The American Senior Benefits Association® (ASBA®) is now partnering with Grateful Memories®, an organization that helps family members create lasting memory booklets, funeral programs and prayer cards. When a loved one passes away, planning a funeral can take an emotional toll on the survivors. Arranging a service, writing an obituary, choosing display photos for the wake, and all of the other attendant responsibilities can leave little time to create a lasting memorial. Grateful Memories® provides a simple, yet polished, way to design that lasting remembrance. An easy-to-use online tool guides users through navigation of pre-built templates, allowing them to upload photos and choose poems or verses to create an enduring tribute. Users can also create their own format if they choose. Booklets can then be printed at home or professionally printed by Grateful Memories®. Grateful Memories® offers a Pre-Plan option providing an opportunity for a loved one to choose favorite scripture, hymns and poems to include in the memorial booklet. ASBA members will receive a $15 discount on every order. "When a loved one passes away, family members can be overwrought and ill-equipped to manage the details that funeral planning necessitates", said Bill Hill, Sr., ASBA's President and Chairman of the Board. "Grateful Memories® can help ASBA members easily create a lasting memorial booklet that can be cherished for years to come." Grateful Memories® products can be created by family members or by the funeral directors who plan the services. On the "Place Order" page, please enter Benefit Code "ASBA" to receive your $15 discount. About ASBA - ASBA is a non-profit organization focused on advocacy and education for men and women age 50 and above. ...New data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the overall number of older adults living in poverty has increased. Even more significant is the number of seniors who have experienced an increase in economic insecurity-or those simply living on the edge. ...Apples and pears may keep strokes away. That’s the conclusion of a Dutch study published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association in which researchers found that eating a lot of fruits and vegetables with white flesh may protect against stroke. While previous studies have linked high consumption of fruits and vegetables with lower stroke risk, the researchers’ prospective work is the first to examine associations of fruits and vegetable color groups with stroke. The color of the edible portion of fruits and vegetables reflects the presence of beneficial phytochemicals such as carotenoids and flavonoids. “To prevent stroke, it may be useful to consume considerable amounts of white fruits and vegetables,” said Linda M. Oude Griep, M.Sc., lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow in human nutrition at Wageningen Uninversity in the Netherlands. “For example, eating one apple a day is an easy way to increase white fruits and vegetable intake. “However, other fruits and vegetable color groups may protect against other chronic diseases. Therefore, it remains of importance to consume a lot of fruits and vegetables.” Apples and pears are high in dietary fiber and a flavonoid called quercetin. In the study, other foods in the white category were bananas, cauliflower, chicory and cucumber. Potatoes were classified as a starch.
